Virtual Textures

Use this when your textures use Virtual Texture Streaming. Every map has a twin slot ending in (VT) in a group \ (VT); in VT mode only those slots are used.

Setup

  1. Project Settings > Engine > Rendering > Virtual Textures > Enable virtual texture support (restart).
  2. In the MI: Use Virtual Textures? (00 Settings) on.
  3. Put your VT textures into the (VT) slots, same compression and sRGB as the regular ones.

Tips

  • Default _VT textures for the (VT) slots ship in _Core/Textures (see Presets and helper assets).
  • Height Map is never VT and has no (VT) slot. Turn Virtual Texture Streaming off on your height textures by hand.
  • VT pays off on big unique textures and atlases; small tiling props are usually cheaper without it.
  • Check: r.VT.Borders 1 draws the tiles, stat VirtualTexturing shows page requests.
